AMA Buses and a Tren Urbano Car Become a Moving Art Gallery in Bayamón Through January
CoquiList · With information from WAPA Televisión

Public transit in Bayamón unveiled a gallery on wheels this week. Seven buses of the Metropolitan Bus Authority (AMA) and one Tren Urbano unit have been turned into moving works of art under GALERÍA Puerto Rico, presented Wednesday, November 4 at the Bayamón Tren Urbano station 12. The exhibit will run on regular service through the end of January 2027 12.
Background
The project is organized by the AMA and Yellow Media Group, with Trans Ad part of the production, and it bets that art can draw new riders to a system that has spent years trying to win back passengers 12. AMA president Luis González Rosario said the initiative "transforms the experience of those who use our buses every day" and brings art closer to communities 21. Tito Feliciano, president of Yellow Media Group, described public transit as "a space that connects people, communities and brands" 1.
The Bayamón station is no ordinary backdrop: it is where the Tren Urbano line ends and where several AMA routes connect, making it one of the busiest transfer points in the metro area 2. Meanwhile, the train has been free since March 1, 2024 while fare equipment is calibrated, and the government announced in August a $227 million investment to modernize all 16 stations 3.
The numbers and details
- Vehicles: seven AMA buses and one Tren Urbano unit 12.
- Bus routes: D91, D92, D37 and T2, in Bayamón and the metro area 12. The train unit runs on the line linking Bayamón and Hato Rey 12.
- Artists: eight. From Puerto Rico: Sergio "STUFF" Vázquez ("Soñando"), Spear Torres ("Baya-Móntate"), Abismael "Aby" Ruiz ("Seguimos Aquí"), Don Rimx ("La Mirada") and Carlos Dávila Rinaldi ("Baitcaster Zippo"). Joining them are Golden of Venezuela ("El Coquí de Golden") and Colombians MANIATIC ("PERREO RICO") and AGÜD ("Seguimos Siendo Niños") 12.
- Open call: drew more than 1,000 applications and about 300 proposals in muralism, urban art, illustration, painting and digital art 12. Entries were judged on the artist's track record, visual impact and cultural connection 1.
- Investment: more than $150,000 in private capital, with 17 direct jobs plus work for artists, technicians and installers 1.
- Duration: through the end of January 2027 12.
Spear Torres dedicated his bus to his hometown. "Baya-Móntate is a pretty classic phrase here in Bayamón," he said of his piece's title 2.
What it means for you
If you ride routes D91, D92, D37 or T2, or the Tren Urbano between Bayamón and Hato Rey, your next bus may be one of the eight decorated units. Fares and schedules do not change: this is an exhibit on regular vehicles 12. For anyone outside Bayamón, it is a reason to see work by top artists without paying admission. For local artists, the model, an open call with private financing, shows that transit ad space can become a cultural platform 1.
How to / Checklist
- Go to the Tren Urbano station in Bayamón, the line's terminus and a transfer point for AMA routes 2.
- Look for routes D91, D92, D37 and T2 at Bayamón stops; the decorated units run alongside the rest of the fleet 12.
- If you prefer the train, ride toward Hato Rey and watch for the decorated car; service remains free 13.
- Take photos safely from the platform or stop, never from the tracks or while the bus is moving.
- Mark the deadline: the exhibit runs until the end of January 2027 12.
- For schedules and routes, check the AMA page at dtop.pr.gov/ama.
What's next
The exhibit will be in circulation for three months, through the end of January 2027 12. In parallel, the Tren Urbano is undergoing its own transformation: the $227 million plan includes new electrical systems, emergency generators, real-time information screens and emergency phones at every station, with priority for Deportivo, Piñero and Hato Rey 3. The Integrated Transport Authority said no station will close and that the date for resuming fares, with a new magnetic card, will be announced later 3.
