The drought is tightening and PRASA is weighing scheduled water shutoffs. Up to six municipalities could get notice between this week and late July: San Lorenzo, Comerío, Río Grande, Canóvanas, Loíza and Cidra. 1
What the cuts look like
In Río Grande and Canóvanas the plan starts at 6:00 a.m. on 48-hour cycles: Río Grande's Zone A would have service Friday–Sunday, while Canóvanas' Zone B goes without potable water Friday and Saturday. 2
Why it's happening
Of the island's 19 reservoirs, 14 dropped. 82.6% of the island is abnormally dry, and the National Weather Service forecasts a three-month drought. 3
How to prepare
- Store water for drinking, cooking and hygiene before your cutoff cycle.
- Fill containers; check your cistern/tank if you have one.
- Conserve, and confirm your zone (A or B) with PRASA for your exact schedule.
