LUMA will work in 32 municipalities this week: check if your area loses power and when

If your power goes out this week with no storm and no reported fault, chances are it is planned work. LUMA Energy announced that between Monday, August 24, and Sunday, August 30, it will carry out scheduled work in 32 municipalities, warning that electric service could be temporarily interrupted in the sectors where crews are working ¹². The busiest day will be Wednesday, when the work spreads across 23 towns at once, from the metro area to the mountains and from Fajardo to Mayagüez ¹.

These outage windows are part of the planned-improvements calendar the consortium publishes every week. The work includes new construction, disconnection and reconnection of underground customers, installation of automated equipment, removal of hazardous vegetation, hot-spot repairs, replacement and repair of power lines and equipment, restoration and modernization of substations, and pole-resilience projects ¹². The company maintains that although the interruptions are inconvenient, the work is necessary to maintain the infrastructure and give the system long-term reliability ². "As we continue our scheduled maintenance, we appreciate our customers' patience and understanding," the consortium said ¹.

The calendar, day by day

• Monday the 24th: Caguas, Carolina, Arecibo, Gurabo, Cabo Rojo, Juana Díaz and Ponce. In Arecibo, pole-resilience work covers more than 15 sectors, including Boquerón, Canta Gallo, Los Caños and the Mattei parcels ¹.
• Tuesday the 25th: Barceloneta, Utuado, Gurabo, San Juan, Vega Alta, Bayamón, Villalba, Coamo and Guánica. In Guánica the list is extensive: the Esperanza neighborhood, the Bélgica and María Antonia communities, the Jardines de Guánica public housing complex and the Bahía and Reparto Oasis subdivisions, among others ¹.
• Wednesday the 26th, the peak day: Trujillo Alto, Utuado, Maricao, Fajardo, Mayagüez, Arecibo, Bayamón, Quebradillas, Cabo Rojo, Manatí, Aguas Buenas, Guaynabo, Aibonito, Barranquitas, Gurabo, Santa Isabel, Humacao, Ponce, Carolina, San Juan, Aguadilla, Isabela and Cidra. In Mayagüez, substation modernization reaches from the urban center and La Salud to the University of Puerto Rico's Mayagüez campus; in Fajardo it impacts the Pedro Rosario public housing complex, the Veve Calzada neighborhood and three shopping centers ¹.
• Thursday the 27th: San Juan, Aguada, Gurabo, Carolina, Ponce, Utuado, Cabo Rojo, Guaynabo, Fajardo, San Germán and Sabana Grande. In San Germán the work includes the Las Lomas, El Recreo and Manuel F. Rossy public housing complexes and the Concepción 1 and 2 medical towers ¹.
• Friday the 28th: Coamo, Cidra, Guaynabo, Cabo Rojo and Barceloneta ¹.
• Saturday the 29th: no scheduled work ¹.
• Sunday the 30th: San Juan only, in the Carraízo Alto ward, road PR-176, kilometer 12.1 ¹.

One detail many people miss: several jobs touch lines that feed Aqueduct Authority pumps, such as at Río Culebrinas in Aguadilla and on PR-837 in the Santa Rosa ward of Guaynabo. In those areas, a power interruption can also translate into low water pressure while the work lasts ¹.

If your subdivision, neighborhood or condo appears on your town's list, plan the day assuming the power may go out during daytime working hours. For anyone studying or working remotely from home, that means lining up a backup plan for internet or workspace ahead of time. LUMA recommended precautions especially for customers who depend on electric medical equipment, and unplugging sensitive appliances during the scheduled work, because line re-energizing can bring voltage fluctuations that damage electronics ¹². If you live in an impacted public housing complex or condo, such as Pedro Rosario in Fajardo or Las Lomas in San Germán, ask the administration whether there is an emergency generator and which areas it covers ¹.

6. Keep the fridge closed during the outage; it holds its temperature for more hours and protects your groceries.

LUMA publishes these calendars week by week, so the list of towns will change next Monday ²³. The substation work in Fajardo repeats on Thursday, a sign that this modernization will continue in phases ¹.
