Vega Baja Hosts Beach Volleyball Olympic Qualifier: One Los Angeles 2028 Berth Up for Grabs Nov. 6-8
CoquiList · With information from Federación Puertorriqueña de Voleibol

Starting Friday, Vega Baja becomes the center of continental beach volleyball. From November 6 to 8, the Areia Sports Complex hosts the NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualifier, a tournament with one direct Olympic berth per gender for the Los Angeles 2028 Games at stake 13. Puerto Rico arrives with two pairs, one women's and one men's, that stood on the podium just weeks ago 3.
Background: a road that starts at home
For Puerto Rican beach volleyball, this is the first of four possible roads to Los Angeles 2028 4. According to El Nuevo Día, coach Ángel "Cholo" Peña explained that the other routes are the 2027 World Championship, the June 2028 world ranking and three international qualifying tournaments in 2028 4. Peña put it this way: "El Preolímpico es la vía de mayor posibilidad porque estamos en casa" (the Preolímpico is the likeliest route because we are at home) 4.
History weighs on this. Puerto Rico's only Olympic representation in the sport was Ramón "Monchito" Hernández and Raúl Papaleo at Athens 2004, and Peña was part of that delegation 4. NORCECA approved the Areia Sports Complex as host in June, and its vice president, Ariel Sainz Rodríguez, inspected the facilities and will attend the tournament 41.
The numbers
- Dates: Friday, November 6 through Sunday, November 8, 2026 32.
- Venue: Areia Sports Complex, Vega Baja, with eight lighted courts 34.
- Teams: 23 pairs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean: 10 women's and 13 men's 3.
- Berths: one direct Olympic spot per gender 3. To earn it, a team must finish first in its division 4.
- Women's field: Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States 3.
- Men's field: Barbados, Bermuda, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, U.S. Virgin Islands, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States 3.
Puerto Rico will be represented by Allanis Navas and Keishlyann Sánchez in the women's draw, and Diego Rosich and William Rivera in the men's 3. Both pairs won medals at the eighth stop of the 2026 NORCECA Continental Tour in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic 3. Navas and Sánchez have played together only briefly, since Sánchez stepped in for María González, who was injured 4.
The rivals
On the women's side, El Nuevo Día points to the United States, with Kelly Cheng and Megan Kraft, ranked sixth in the world, and Canada, with Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson, Paris 2024 silver medalists ranked seventh 4. In the men's draw, the big names are Taylor Crabb and Chase Budinger for the United States, and Samuel Schachter and Jonathan Pickett for Canada 4. Peña believes the gap between those two powers and the rest of the field is smaller among men, which leaves an opening for Rosich and Rivera 4.
What it means for you
If you love sports or live on the north coast, an Olympic-level tournament is on your doorstep. It is a rare chance to watch Paris 2024 medalists live without leaving Puerto Rico. For families, it is also a weekend outing with three days of competition.
One important caveat: the sources we reviewed do not state ticket prices, whether admission is free, or any TV coverage 123. We will not assume anything that is not confirmed; check with the organizers before heading out.
How to / Checklist
- Confirm admission. Check the Puerto Rico Volleyball Federation (fedpurvoli.com) and its social media to learn whether tickets are required or entry is free 2.
- Wait for the official schedule. The federation said the match calendar will be distributed after the preliminary team meeting on Thursday, November 5 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Place Manatí 2.
- Plan your trip to Vega Baja. Leave early, since fans of several delegations are expected; confirm the exact address of the Areia Sports Complex with the federation 1.
- Bring sunscreen, water and a hat or umbrella, since matches are played on sand courts.
- Follow the FPV and NORCECA social media for schedule updates and results 12.
What's next
If the format is confirmed as El Nuevo Día anticipates, there will be a group stage followed by direct-elimination rounds through the finals on Sunday, November 8 4. NORCECA had not confirmed the format at press time 4. If Puerto Rico does not win the berth this week, three other routes remain toward 2028, from the 2027 World Championship to the world ranking 4.
