The weekend of September 19-20 left a snapshot that sums up where grassroots sports in Puerto Rico are headed: in Gurabo, the Sur A team was crowned Doble A Juvenil baseball champion after beating Norte B 4-2 in the gold-medal final at Estadio Evaristo "Varo" Roldan, while islandwide the eleventh edition of the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee's (COPUR) Copa Olimpica closed out with a record 3,224 participations across 17 disciplines and six venues 23.

The Copa Olimpica kicked off Saturday, September 19, with 1,656 athletes competing across 17 sports on the opening day, everything from badminton and fencing to road cycling and triathlon 1. Sunday, September 20, added 1,568 more participations, closing the event out at a total of 3,224 2. The event, which brings together athletes ranging from youth and junior categories all the way up to national team members every year, was headquartered at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan, alongside the Gurabo Sports Complex, the Honda Tennis Center in Bayamon, the Olympic Village in Salinas, Chardon Street for road cycling, the Old San Juan Landfill for BMX, and Punta Salinas Beach in Toa Baja for triathlon 14.

Background

The Copa Olimpica is COPUR's flagship event for taking the pulse of Puerto Rico's sports development system in years without a major international games cycle. This edition landed just weeks after dozens of Puerto Rican athletes competed at the 2026 Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games, and several of those medalists -- including Kristal Melendez in table tennis and Jonovan Smith in wrestling -- showed up on the courts and tracks of the Copa Olimpica just days after returning from the Dominican Republic 12. COPUR president Sara Rosario Velez said having more than 1,600 athletes competing on a single day "shows how important it is to keep creating spaces for sports development" 1.

The numbers and the gold-medal final

On the diamond in Gurabo, the Doble A Juvenil Baseball League championship closed out its Copa Olimpica slate with two decisive games. In the gold-medal final, Sur A beat Norte B by a score of 4-2. In the bronze-medal game, Sur B topped Norte A 7-3 3. Individual tournament honors went to Diego Ramos of the Azucareros Jr. de Yabucoa (Sur B), named the tournament's best hitter, and to Amaury Martinez of the Halcones de Gurabo (Norte B), named best pitcher 3. The medals were presented by COPUR secretary general Carlos Beltran, alongside Doble A Juvenil League director Jose Rafael Torres and tournament coordinator Jose Mayo 3.

Elsewhere at the Copa Olimpica, the weekend's program included badminton, 3x3 basketball, team handball, fencing, judo, karate-do, weightlifting, table tennis, a rowing exhibition, track and field, U17 women's softball, skateboarding, junior tennis, road cycling, BMX, and triathlon, in addition to the Doble A Juvenil baseball tournament itself 124.

What this means for you

For Puerto Rican families with kids in federated sports programs, the Copa Olimpica is the biggest showcase of the year outside of an Olympic or Central American cycle: it's where a junior ballplayer from Yabucoa or Gurabo shares a stage with Santo Domingo 2026 medalists, and where COPUR gauges which federations are actually building a pipeline. If your child competes in any of the 17 disciplines, this is exactly the kind of event that serves as a springboard toward national teams and college scholarships. And if you follow amateur baseball, Sur A's title confirms the southern region of the island is still producing talent at the youth level, even in years that don't get much media coverage.

How to follow it / Checklist

  1. Follow COPUR's official channels (copur.pr) and the Doble A Juvenil Baseball League on social media for the 2026-27 season calendar, which historically kicks off in the spring.
  2. If you have a young athlete interested in any of the federations that took part -- fencing, judo, table tennis, badminton, weightlifting, karate-do, or rowing -- reach out directly to the corresponding federation through COPUR for registration and talent tryouts.
  3. Mark your calendar for the twelfth edition of the Copa Olimpica, historically held in late September; COPUR usually announces dates and venues several weeks ahead on its official channels.
  4. To follow Doble A Juvenil in Gurabo, reach out to the league through Jose Rafael Torres or visit Estadio Evaristo "Varo" Roldan during the next regular season.
  5. If you want to support the Sur A champions or the Azucareros Jr. de Yabucoa, keep an eye out for exhibition-game announcements or local appearances in their hometowns.

What's next

COPUR is already working on preparations for the close of its 2026 international calendar, which includes remaining commitments from several Puerto Rican federations before year's end 1. Meanwhile, the Doble A Juvenil Baseball League will evaluate this crop of champions heading into the 2026-27 season, and it isn't out of the question that standout players like Diego Ramos and Amaury Martinez could be called up to represent Puerto Rico in future international youth competitions. COPUR's stated mission, per Rosario Velez, is to keep "creating spaces for sports development" that connect community-level sports with the national teams 1.
