Nine Years After Maria: Vieques Opens Its New $85.5 Million Hospital
CoquiList · With information from El Nuevo Día

Nine years after Hurricane Maria destroyed Vieques' only health facility, the Puerto Rico government inaugurated the new Susana Centeno Hospital this past Saturday, September 26, an $85.5 million project that restores emergency, dialysis, behavioral health and diagnostic services the island municipality had gone without under one roof for nearly a decade 1.
Governor Jenniffer Gonzalez led the ceremony alongside U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Puerto Rico Health Secretary Victor Ramos, and Vieques Mayor Jose "Junito" Corcino Acevedo 1. Also attending were the executive director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration, Gabriella Boffelli; House Speaker Carlos "Johnny" Mendez; La Fortaleza Secretary Norma Burgos; and the executive director of the Health Insurance Administration, Carlos Santiago 1. "We are closing a chapter of something we started while in Washington, for the people of Vieques and fulfilling a commitment to a community that for too long had to leave its island to receive essential health services," Gonzalez said in written statements 1.
The old Vieques health center went out of service after Maria hit in September 2017, forcing residents for years to depend on boat, plane, or helicopter transfers for anything beyond basic medical care 13. FEMA announced in January 2020 the obligation of roughly $39.5 million for the reconstruction, and the project moved forward under the administrations of former governors Wanda Vazquez and Pedro Pierluisi before the government certified that construction wrapped up on July 29 of this year 1.
The total investment in the project reached $85,558,319.52, of which $48.3 million came from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), plus state and local funds, according to the government 1. The design-and-construction contract alone totaled $75.98 million 1. The hospital includes an emergency room, outpatient clinics, dialysis and infusion services, behavioral health care (emotional support and crisis management), and diagnostic capacity, plus a helipad that received Federal Aviation Administration certification this past April to speed up transfers of patients who need specialized care off the island 12. The dialysis service has already been running at the new facility for nearly a year: it started in October 2025, before the rest of the building was finished 1. This year, several Health Department offices and programs also relocated to the center, including the Demographic Registry, the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Medicaid, Environmental Health, and the Mothers and Children Program 13.
What This Means for You
For Vieques residents, the hospital's opening marks the end of nearly a decade of depending on boat or air transfers for anything beyond first aid 12. "For an island municipality reachable only by air or sea, having health services here is not a luxury, it is a necessity. A medical emergency cannot depend on catching a boat, a plane, or a helicopter to begin receiving care," the governor said during the event 1. Kennedy Jr., for his part, described the opening as the close of "nine years of work" and said the facility "means access, security, and peace of mind for thousands of citizens who live on the Island Nena" 13. For families already using the dialysis service or the WIC and Medicaid offices relocated this year, the change is already an operational reality, not a promise 1.
How to Do It / Checklist
- If you have a medical emergency in Vieques, go directly to the new Susana Centeno Hospital; the emergency room is already operating in the permanent facility 12.
- If you receive dialysis or infusion treatment, confirm your appointment at the new site: the service moved there starting in October 2025 1.
- If you use WIC, the Demographic Registry, or Medicaid services in Vieques, check that your paperwork is already being handled at the new center before planning a trip to the main island 13.
- If you need behavioral health support (crisis management or emotional care), ask specifically about that service, which is new to the center's offerings 12.
- If a family member needs an emergency air transfer off Vieques, the FAA-certified helipad has sped up that process since April 1.
- If you plan to accompany a patient in extended treatment, watch for announcements about the guest lodge the government plans to build near the center, though it has no start date yet 1.
What's Next
The government confirmed it plans to build a guest lodge near the hospital for families of patients in extended treatment and for specialists and medical staff traveling to the island municipality, though La Fortaleza's statement did not specify when that project would begin 1. Governor Gonzalez, who said she has known the project "since its beginnings" from her time as resident commissioner in Washington, said she will keep following up on the new center's operations in the coming months 1. For now, Health officials' priority will be stabilizing the services that just relocated and assessing whether additional specialists are needed for the island municipality's outpatient clinics 123.
