Card Delinquency Hits 8.1% in Puerto Rico, Above the U.S., as Inflation Reaches 3.8%
CoquiList · With information from NotiCel

When the Federal Reserve Bank of New York adviser stepped up to the podium in the Senate on Wednesday, November 4, she left behind a number that explains why so many families feel their paycheck no longer stretches: credit card delinquency in Puerto Rico reached 8.1% in 2026, versus 7% in the United States 1. That is more than a full percentage point of difference, and it arrives just as prices are rising faster than a year ago.
Background
The Financial Oversight Board held its annual economic projections symposium for 2027 in the Leopoldo Figueroa Room of the Capitol, with six presenters and legislators and the governor's fiscal team in attendance 3. The economists' message was nearly unanimous: the economy has grown little over the past two years and the next one looks weak or negative 12.
Joelle Scally of the New York Fed explained that employment remains stable, but that the rise in card delinquency reveals mounting pressure on households 2. Gustavo Rojas Matute of Moody's Analytics described the economy as "bien débil, bien frágil" (very weak, very fragile) 1.
The numbers
- Card delinquency: 8.1% in Puerto Rico against 7% in the United States, according to Scally 1.
- Interest rates: cards sit near 21% a year 2.
- Inflation: the Consumer Price Index rose 0.5% in September from August and 3.8% from September 2025, per the Department of Labor's October 26 report 4.
- Purchasing power: the dollar was worth about 69 cents in September, a loss of roughly 31% since December 2006 4.
- Transportation: the group rose 9.7% over the year, the biggest jump in the report; fuel is up 33.2% so far in 2026 4.
- Bankruptcies: 551 in September, 5.8% more than in September 2025, according to the Centro Unido de Detallistas 4. Xavier Diví of V2A Consulting said the pace is 40% faster than last year 1.
- 2027 forecasts: from a 1.4% contraction (Estudios Técnicos, for fiscal-year real gross national product) to 0.3% growth (Moody's) 2. Diví summed it up: "En el balance, 2027 se perfila negativo" (on balance, 2027 looks negative) 1.
- Jobs and sales: Leslie Adames of Estudios Técnicos noted that much of the new employment is part-time and that retail sales are shrinking once inflation is removed 1.
The projections measure different indicators and are not strictly comparable 2. Even so, they point the same way.
What it means for you
An 8.1% delinquency rate means roughly one in twelve card balances falls seriously behind. At 21% interest, a $2,000 balance left unpaid generates about $420 a year in finance charges alone, around $35 a month that never touches principal 2.
On the price side, a $150 grocery run now costs about $153.75 given the 2.5% yearly rise in food, and a $40 tank of gas becomes roughly $53 because of fuel costs 4. That pressure lands right before the holidays, when merchants expect a cautious shopper who compares prices and cuts elsewhere to protect Christmas spending 5.
Households that rely on credit to cover basics are most exposed: if work cools off or hours are cut, card arrears are the first thing to show, and from there it is a short road to personal bankruptcy, as the 2026 pace suggests 14.
How to / Checklist
- Take inventory today. List every card, balance, interest rate and minimum payment. Sort from highest rate to lowest.
- Pay the most expensive one first. Keep paying the minimum on all of them and send every extra dollar to the highest-rate card (the avalanche method).
- Call your bank before you fall behind. Ask for a payment plan, a lower rate or a deferral. Banks prefer to negotiate rather than lose the balance. Write down the date, the representative's name and what was agreed.
- Check your credit report for free at annualcreditreport.com and dispute any errors.
- Cap your holiday budget. Set a total in cash or debit before Black Friday and stick to it; compare prices across stores.
- If you are already in trouble, get help. You can file a complaint against a bank or debt collector with the Office of the Commissioner of Financial Institutions (ocif.pr.gov) or at consumerfinance.gov, or call the CFPB at 1-855-411-2372. For disputes with merchants, DACO is at daco.pr.gov.
- Before considering bankruptcy, talk to a lawyer or a certified credit counselor; there are alternatives such as consolidation or a repayment plan.
What's next
The Board will use these projections to shape the fiscal-year 2027 budget, and the economists warned about the so-called Medicaid fiscal cliff, when federal funds drop sharply after September 2027 2. The Department of Labor will publish the October price index in the coming weeks, the first reading to show whether the rise in gasoline and transportation levels off or spreads to other items. Meanwhile, merchants project U.S. holiday sales growing between 4% and 4.8% 5, but in Puerto Rico shoppers will reach the season with less room to maneuver.
