11 Days Without Classes: Public Schools Close November 18 and Return November 30
CoquiList · With information from Metro Puerto Rico

There are 15 days left before the last bell rings ahead of the longest break of the semester: Wednesday, November 18 is the last day of classes in public schools, and students do not return until Monday, November 30, a stretch of 11 straight days without open classrooms 1. If you have kids in the system, build a plan now, because the school calendar does not match your work calendar.
Background
Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés announced the break in a radio interview on Friday, October 23, 2026, and said the official communication to schools would arrive soon 1. The reason is calendar math: the school year includes extra days set aside for emergencies, which lets the department close the entire Thanksgiving week without dropping below the 180-day instructional minimum 1.
The decision also lines up with the days off that Governor Jenniffer González Colón granted Executive Branch employees two days earlier, on October 21, through Executive Order 2026-055 23. In other words, much of the government will be closed when schools are.
The numbers and dates
Here is how the month looks for public schools, as announced 1:
- Wednesday, November 18: last day of classes.
- Thursday, November 19: holiday for Puerto Rican Identity Day (Día de la Puertorriqueñidad).
- Friday, November 20: no classes.
- Monday, November 23 through Friday, November 27: no classes, Thanksgiving week.
- Monday, November 30: classes resume.
Counting weekends, that is 11 consecutive days out of the classroom 1.
For Executive Branch employees, Executive Order 2026-055 draws a different map 2:
- Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27: holidays with no charge to leave.
- Friday, November 20 and Wednesday, November 25: days off charged to vacation leave.
- Saturday, November 28 stays a regular workday, and each appointing authority decides whether its agency closes 2.
The order covers agencies, instrumentalities, offices and public corporations in the Executive Branch; municipalities only join if they adopt it by ordinance 2. Agencies outside the Law 8-2017 system follow their own rules 2. One caveat: another outlet reported November 27 as a no-charge day and the wording varies across write-ups, so confirm the text with your agency 3.
What it means for you
If you are an Executive Branch employee with a child in public school, November 20 and 25 would come out of your vacation time, even though schools will already be closed on the 20th and all of the week of the 23rd 12. There is a real gap: Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24 are workdays for you, but your kids have no classes 12. If you work in the private sector, the executive order does not apply to you, and you will have to solve child care yourself for all five days of that week 2.
The secretary also asked parents to visit schools to learn how their children are doing academically, and to make that conversation cover social development, behavior and needs, not just grades 1. With the break approaching, that meeting becomes the last chance to talk with the teacher before November closes out.
How to / Checklist
- Mark Wednesday, November 18 (last day) and Monday, November 30 (return) on your calendar 1.
- Watch for the official notice from your child's school; the department said it would go out soon 1. If it has not reached you, call the school or check the Department of Education's official site, de.pr.gov.
- If you are a public employee, ask your agency's Human Resources office whether your workplace closes on November 28 and how November 20 and 25 are recorded 2. Each agency handles implementation under OATRH Special Memorandum 18-2026 2.
- If you work that Monday the 23rd and Tuesday the 24th, line up child care early: relatives, neighbors or municipal programs.
- Book a meeting with your child's teacher before November 18 to review grades, conduct and needs 1.
- Orientation sessions and enrollment processes for specialized schools also begin in November; if you are interested in one, ask at your child's school for dates and requirements 1.
What's next
The Department of Education's official circular should spell out the calendar and any details for teachers and school cafeterias, which the initial announcement did not include 1. On the government side, the order also frees December 25 and January 1, 2027, and charges December 24 to vacation leave, so holiday planning cannot wait either 2. Classes resume on Monday, November 30 1.
