The sixth edition of the True Colors Fest, the festival celebrating diversity in Puerto Rico's performing arts, revealed its nominees across 12 categories ahead of the awards ceremony scheduled for this Saturday, August 2, at Casa Club Sigma in Hato Rey 1. The event closes a season that kicked off June 18 and ran through July 26 at the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré in Santurce, featuring six productions that explored identity, gender, and community from the stage 1.

The nominated productions are "Hola Mamá" by Producciones Girasol, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" by Black Box, "Viene Viene el Drag King" starring Vico Ortiz, "Seis," "Vestido de Mujer" by Corillo Eventos, and "Todos Hablan de Jamie" with Jazael Rodríguez in the lead role 1.

Two productions dominate the nominations. "Vestido de Mujer," directed by José Manuel Díaz, appears in virtually every category, including Best Production, Best Direction, Best Set Design, Best Costume, and Best Makeup 1. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," produced and designed by Miguel Rosa, has nominations in Best Production, Best Lighting, Best Costume, Best Sound, and Best Graphic Design, with Yan Carlos Díaz nominated for Best Lead Performance 1.

Among the Best Lead Performance nominees are Johanna Rosaly and Omar Torres for "Hola Mamá" and Jazael Rodríguez for "Todos Hablan de Jamie" 1. Rodríguez, who adapted the story from the British documentary "Jamie: Drag Queen at 16," described the role as "a great responsibility" and said the musical is aimed at "everyone who was ever afraid of chasing a dream and needed someone to believe in them" 3. The production featured Denise Quiñones as the protagonist's mother and Modesto Lacén as his father 3.

Vico Ortiz, a non-binary actor known for HBO Max's "Our Flag Means Death," brought the Spanish-language version of their one-person show "Viene Viene el Drag King" to Puerto Rico for the first time, adapted from "The Rise of a King" 2. The production, directed by Ismanuel Rodríguez with lighting by María Cristina Fusté, ran July 2-5 at the Sala Experimental of the Centro de Bellas Artes 2. Ortiz described drag as a "healing and transformative" experience that allows exploration beyond society's gender expectations 2.

The True Colors Fest has established itself as the island's premier platform for LGBTQ+ theater, growing from its first edition into a showcase that attracts local and international talent to the Centro de Bellas Artes every summer 12.

What this means for you

This festival demonstrates that Puerto Rican theater is producing professional-caliber work that addresses themes of diversity, identity, and expression with artistic courage. For general audiences, it means access to productions not typically seen in traditional commercial circuits. For emerging artists, the festival offers visibility and formal recognition in a field where opportunities to tell diverse stories have been historically limited. The True Colors Fest awards validate the work of actors, directors, designers, and technicians who invest in inclusive narratives.

How to do it / Checklist

  1. Mark Saturday, August 2, at 7:00 p.m. on your calendar for the awards ceremony at Casa Club Sigma in Hato Rey 1.
  2. Review the complete list of nominees across 12 categories published by El Nuevo Día to learn about the recognized productions and talent 1.
  3. Follow True Colors Fest on social media to find out the winners if you cannot attend the ceremony in person.
  4. Look for winning productions in future seasons: award-winning shows frequently schedule encore performances at the Centro de Bellas Artes or alternative venues.
  5. Support diverse local theater by purchasing tickets for upcoming productions from nominated groups like Producciones Girasol, Black Box, and Corillo Eventos.

What comes next

The August 2 ceremony will determine which production takes home the Best Production award among the six contenders. With "Vestido de Mujer" and "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" leading the nominations, the competition promises to be fierce. The results will also set the tone for the festival's seventh edition in 2027, signaling which types of artistic proposals resonate most with the jury and audiences. Meanwhile, the island's theater scene remains active: an assembly convened in July to address challenges in the theater sector aims to strengthen the infrastructure that sustains festivals like this one 4.
