Back to school: the 'hoja verde' (PVAC-3), where to get it free, and your checklist before August 6

Public school classes start Wednesday, August 6, and if you have kids at home you know what that means: enrollment, uniforms, supplies... and the document everyone forgets until the last minute — the famous hoja verde. CoquiList put together the full checklist so you hit day one without the mad dash.

What the hoja verde (PVAC-3) is

The PVAC-3, known as the hoja verde (green sheet), is the official vaccination certificate the Department of Education requires to enroll a student. It's not optional: Law 25 of 1983 says no student can be admitted to a school, daycare, or preschool without being properly immunized.¹³ The school vaccine schedule protects against 21 diseases and includes, by age, doses for hepatitis, influenza, HPV, meningitis, and COVID-19.³⁵

Where to get it FREE

You don't have to pay for the hoja verde if you know where to go:

• Department of Health: issues the PVAC-3 free of charge at its centers; check salud.pr.gov or call 787-522-3985 (8am–4:30pm).¹²
• VOCES centers: the immunization coalition certifies the hoja verde free in several municipalities; info at 787-789-4008.⁴
• Store events: every back-to-school season, free vaccination and certification clinics pop up at stores across the island (Bayamón, Caguas, Carolina, Ponce, Mayagüez and more) — watch for this year's weekend announcements.²⁴
• Pharmacies and pediatricians also issue it, though some charge a fee; ask first.⁴

Important: minors (up to age 21) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with photo ID, and bring the vaccine card or the pediatrician's records.¹

Your checklist before August 6

• Hoja verde (PVAC-3) up to date — handle it this week or next; the last week of July, the lines explode.
• Missing vaccines: if your kid needs a dose, the same center that vaccinates usually issues the hoja verde during the visit.²
• Enrollment documents: birth certificate, proof of address, and academic records if switching schools.
• Uniforms and supplies: compare prices now — and note, this weekend (July 17-18) is the tax-free (IVU) weekend, perfect for uniforms, shoes, and school supplies.
• Sleep routine: pediatricians recommend adjusting bedtime one or two weeks ahead — not the night before.⁵

What it means for you

Standing in line in August is optional — the hoja verde can be handled today, free and unhurried. Leave it for the last week of July and you get the crowds plus the risk of missing the paper on day one. Twenty minutes this week saves you the August crisis.
