Mayagüez becomes the salsa capital this weekend: free Frankie Ruiz Festival with Gilberto Santa Rosa and El Gran Combo

If you still don't have weekend plans, the west coast is calling with three nights of free salsa and a lineup that reads like a collector's record shelf. The eighth edition of the Festival de Salsa Frankie Ruiz runs from Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30 at the Concha Acústica of the Palacio de Recreación y Deportes in Mayagüez, with admission completely free of charge ¹². The stage will host Gilberto Santa Rosa, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, La Sonora Ponceña, Michael Stuart, Maelo Ruiz, Willie González, Viti Ruiz, Frankie Ruiz Jr., Orquesta La Solución, Giro and Edwin Morales' orchestra Mulenze, among other guests ¹²³.

The festival was born to keep alive the legacy of Frankie Ruiz, "El Papá de la Salsa," who was born in Paterson, New Jersey, but grew up in Mayagüez and always claimed the Sultana del Oeste as home. The voice behind classics like "Tú con él," "La cura" and "Mi libertad" passed away in August 1998, and every summer the city returns the love with this gathering that has become a late-August tradition ².
