Celia Cruz's Dresses Arrive in Puerto Rico Before Entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Since July 30, designer Gustavo Arango's atelier inside The Mall of San Juan has doubled as a textile shrine to the Guarachera de Cuba. The exhibition "Azucar: 100 anos de Celia Cruz" opened with a packed inauguration that drew fans, designers, and figures from the music industry, and it will remain open free of charge through August 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 13
The show is not a one-off. It is part of a touring commemoration marking Celia Cruz's centennial that has already stopped at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. and the Bass Museum in Miami before landing on the island where she rose to become the queen of salsa on countless stages. And Puerto Rico is not the final stop either: several pieces from this collection will go on to become part of the permanent collection at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, where Celia Cruz will be the first Latina artist ever honored. 2
Among the pieces visitors can see up close is an orange caftan designed by Willy Mena, the same one Celia wore in the music video for "La Negra Tiene Tumbao," along with the matching wigs that completed the look. There is also "The Sun Dress," a silk gown embroidered with thousands of multicolored beads that she wore at the 50th anniversary concert of Mexico City's National Auditorium in 2000. An African caftan she wore performing with La Sonora Matancera in a Central Park concert is on display, along with a purple sequined gown by Irma Penalver, a black and silver dress by Indian designer Kumar, and the Japanese-designed dress featured on the cover of her album "Siempre Vivire." Rounding out the collection are a Gucci handbag, personal jewelry, and custom-made shoes by Mexican designer Nieto. 13
Facts and numbers
The exhibition spans more than four decades of wardrobe, from pieces dating to the 1970s through creations from the 2000s. Admission is free for the full two weeks the show runs at The Mall of San Juan. This chapter of the commemoration will close with a symphonic concert on August 15 at 8:30 p.m. at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce, also titled "Azucar: 100 anos de Celia Cruz," featuring singer Lena Burke accompanied by the Orquesta Filarmonica Arturo Somohano. The project is produced by Rafo Muniz for ProLat Entertainment together with the Fundacion Arturo Somohano. 24
Designer Gustavo Arango, who is lending his atelier for the show, described the moment this way: "It's an honor to receive in my space memorabilia from one of the most transcendent and iconic figures in Latin music." 2
What it means for you
If you grew up hearing "Azucar" blasting in your grandmother's living room, this is a real chance to stand in front of the clothes Celia Cruz wore during moments that are already history in Latin music, without paying a cent to get in. For Puerto Rico, it is also a form of recognition: the island is a required stop on the international route of this commemoration, alongside institutions like the Smithsonian. And for the local arts community, it is a chance to see up close how an event of this caliber comes together, from the design of the space to the production of the symphonic concert that follows it. 123
How to do it / Checklist

- Plan your visit between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., the confirmed operating hours.
- Arrive early if you want to avoid peak mall traffic, especially on weekends.
- No ticket is needed: admission to the exhibition is free.
- If you want to extend the experience, save the night of August 15 for the concert at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce with Lena Burke and the Orquesta Filarmonica Arturo Somohano.
- Follow ProLat Entertainment and the Fundacion Arturo Somohano for ticket details on that concert.
- If you have family photos or objects connected to Celia Cruz in Puerto Rico, this is a good week to share them on social media around the centennial moment.
What's next
After the exhibition closes at The Mall of San Juan on August 13, attention shifts to the Centro de Bellas Artes in Santurce for the symphonic concert on August 15, which will formally close out this Puerto Rican chapter of the centennial tour. From there, the collection will continue its journey to Cleveland, where the selected pieces will become part of the permanent collection at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, marking the first time a Latina artist receives that institutional recognition. More details on concert tickets and on exactly which pieces will ultimately travel to Ohio are expected in the coming weeks. 24
