UPR Has Opened Admissions for August 2027: Apply Free Online, With an Automatic Route for the Top 20%

The University of Puerto Rico opened its online admission process for the 2027-2028 academic year this Thursday, August 27, meaning students who hope to start undergraduate studies in August 2027 can already file their application at admisiones.upr.edu for any of the system's 11 campuses and units 12. UPR president Zayira Jordán Conde made the announcement, and it comes considerably earlier than the previous cycle, when access to the application went live in October 12.
"Today we open the doors to a new generation of students who will have in the UPR the opportunity to receive an education of excellence, fully develop their abilities and prepare to lead the future of Puerto Rico and the world," Jordán Conde said in announcing the opening 1.
The move matters because it pushes up the entire clock for the class of 2027. Seniors who started their fourth year of high school this month do not have to wait until late fall to lock in their spot: the portal is already live with requirements, application steps, the academic offerings of each campus, financial aid information and guidance for international students 12. Anyone who prefers to study remotely can explore virtual.upr.edu, the platform that gathers fully online academic programs, short courses and professional certifications 1.
The key numbers: UPR has 11 campuses and units, the application costs nothing at the moment of filing, and if you are admitted, $30 is added to the cost of your first-semester tuition, a charge that in many cases is covered by scholarships 34. For the traditional route, admission is decided by the IGS (General Application Index), calculated as 50% high school GPA, 25% verbal reasoning and 25% math reasoning from the College Board (PAA) or SAT exams; scores are valid for five years, and if you retake the test, your highest scores count 4. The portal includes an IGS calculator so you can estimate your chances before choosing a program 2.
There is a second door many families do not know about: automatic admission under Law 113-2025. Students who finished eleventh grade in the top 20% of their class may qualify for early automatic admission, subject to applicable provisions 1. In the last cycle, that process ran in the fall with a short window — it opened October 23 and closed November 7, 2025, with confirmation in December — and let eligible students rank up to five programs in order of preference 3. There is also a non-traditional route, with a minimum 2.00 GPA, for talented students, specialized-school students, dual-enrollment participants, low-income students, adult learners, people with functional diversity and first responders 2.
What it means for you
If your son or daughter is a high school senior right now, this is the moment to move: the application is open as of now, and filing early gives you time to fix documents, compare campuses and line up financial aid 12. If they finished eleventh grade in the top 20% of their class, keep an eye on the school and their email, because the automatic route under Law 113-2025 tends to open with short windows in the fall 13. And if you are an adult looking to go back to school, the non-traditional route with its 2.00 minimum GPA and the online catalog at virtual.upr.edu are real options that do not require the PAA in every case 12.
How to do it / Checklist
- Go to admisiones.upr.edu and click "Solicita Ahora"; create your credentials at solicitud.upr.edu 2.
- Have your GPA and your PAA or SAT results on hand if you are applying through the traditional route; remember scores are valid for five years 4.
- Use the portal's IGS calculator to estimate your index (50% GPA, 25% verbal, 25% math) and compare it against the programs you want 24.
- If you are in the top 20% of your class at the end of eleventh grade, ask your school about automatic admission under Law 113-2025 and watch your email 13.
- Choose your study alternatives in order of priority and verify each campus's specific requirements before submitting 24.
- Pay nothing when you file: the $30 charge is added to your first tuition bill only if you are admitted 4.
- For questions, call the Admissions Office at 787-250-0000, extension 3204 4.
What's next
The portal will publish the official 2027-2028 cycle calendar with deadlines for each phase. As a reference, in the previous cycle the general filing deadline was January 23 and traditional-route admission notifications went out between January and February 23. The automatic-admission window for the top 20% should run in the fall, if last year's pattern repeats 3. UPR will also be doing outreach at fairs and events: Admissions staff was at THE SUMM 2026 at the San Juan Convention Center this Thursday, and the portal lists upcoming events by campus 12.
