Heriberto Nieves Opens Old San Juan Preview of His Historic Museo de America Show in Madrid
CoquiList · With information from El Nuevo Dia

At the Puerto Rico Tourism Company headquarters in Old San Juan, sculptor Heriberto Nieves, who is from Vega Alta, inaugurates this Thursday, September 10, the exhibit "Desde el Origen" (From the Origin), a show of 19 pieces that works as a local preview of a milestone for Puerto Rican art: Nieves will become the first Puerto Rican to occupy a full room with a solo exhibit at the Museo de América in Madrid, and the first artist ever to bring contemporary art into that Spanish institution 12.
The project is called "Regreso al Origen" (Return to the Origin) and will occupy the museum's main hall from November 19, 2026 to March 7, 2027, the date on which the center will close its doors for a renovation that will permanently convert that space into a contemporary art wing. The Puerto Rican show opening this week in Old San Juan serves as a local preview before the Madrid version travels to Spain 13.
Nieves, who grew up in the Corea neighborhood of Vega Alta, has carried the craft since childhood: as a boy he stripped tobacco leaves in his father's workshop, an experience he now describes as the root of his relationship with the organic materials that define his work 4. His career already has an international track record, with exhibits in Spain, France, Finland, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, the United States, South Korea and China. He is the only Puerto Rican named a permanent honorary resident of the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, holds a UNESCO Honor Diploma, and received the "Alfonso Caso" Silver Medal from Mexico's National Autonomous University (UNAM) 24.
"Desde el Origen," installed in the Miguel A. Domenech gallery inside the Tourism Company headquarters, gathers 19 works made between 2010 and 2021 that combine black steel, stainless steel, canvas, acrylic paint, concrete, natural leaves and polymeric sealants. The walkthrough closes with "Péndulo," a six-foot-diameter installation made of steel, mineral coal, vegetation and LED light that represents the planet spinning as climate change advances 1.
For the Madrid version, Nieves produced more than twenty new pieces this summer in a colleague's workshop in Madrid, working in temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. He said that after suffering two heat strokes, he had to start his workdays at 3:00 a.m. to avoid the hottest hours of the day. Those pieces explore Puerto Rico's historical moment at the end of the 19th century: the society of that era, migration patterns, the agricultural industries that developed, and the eventual disconnection from the land that led to deforestation 12.
The project is backed by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, the Autonomous Municipality of Vega Alta and the Autonomous Municipality of Bayamón, and is produced by Caribbean University. The Madrid version will also involve museology students from that university and three graduates of the School of Plastic Arts and Design on scholarships from the Fundación Heriberto Nieves, who will take part in mounting the international exhibit. A documentary titled "Regreso al Origen," featuring actress Cordelia González, also premiered, along with a biography of the artist written by Rodolfo Lugo 13.
Que significa para ti
If you care about Puerto Rican art, this week you can see, for free and in Old San Juan, the full trajectory of a Puerto Rican sculptor before his expanded version crosses the Atlantic. It is also a concrete signal that an island artist's work can open a door no Spanish institution had ever opened for anyone before: a full room of contemporary art inside a Madrid state museum. For art and museology students, the project offers something even rarer: three real scholarships from the Fundación Heriberto Nieves to help mount an international show, plus the involvement of Caribbean University students in the curatorial process 13.
Como hacerlo / Checklist
- Visit "Desde el Origen" at the Miguel A. Domenech gallery, inside the Puerto Rico Tourism Company headquarters in Old San Juan, from September 10 through the end of the year. Admission is free.
- Plan your visit during government office hours (Monday through Friday) and confirm the exact schedule with the Tourism Company before going, since the gallery operates inside a government building.
- If you will be traveling to Spain between November and March, mark down November 19, 2026 through March 7, 2027 for "Regreso al Origen" at the Museo de América in Madrid.
- Follow the Fundación Heriberto Nieves' social media if you study at the School of Plastic Arts and Design and are interested in future artistic exchange scholarships.
- If you study museology at Caribbean University, ask about student participation in mounting the Madrid show.
Lo que viene
When "Regreso al Origen" closes at the Museo de América on March 7, 2027, the institution will begin a renovation to permanently convert that room into a contemporary art space, a change the museum's own administration confirmed to Nieves while the project was being developed. The exhibit will also coincide with the season in which Puerto Rico serves as a partner country at Madrid's International Tourism Fair (Fitur), which could broaden the project's visibility among travelers and Spanish media in January 3.
