Tax-free weekend: what's exempt and how to make the most of it (July 17-18)
This Friday July 17 and Saturday July 18, Puerto Rico's first tax-free (sin IVU) back-to-school weekend arrives: uniforms and school supplies are exempt from sales tax, from midnight Friday through 11:59 p.m. Saturday. 1
What's exempt
Covered supplies include: 2
- Backpacks, lunchboxes and folders
- Notebooks, paper, pens, pencils and sharpeners
- Calculators, rulers, compasses, protractors and scissors
- Crayons, markers, glue, chalk and erasers
Art and music materials qualify too: paints, watercolors, brushes, sketchbooks, musical instruments, maps and globes. 2
Exempt all year
Printed and e-books are tax-free year-round, as are retail notebooks, regardless of size. 1
The move to stretch your money
If you get the $800 School Bonus (which started disbursing Thursday), pair it with these two tax-free days so every dollar goes furthest. 3
And mark the second window if you miss it: January 8-9, 2027. 1
