Puerto Rico's Institute of Culture Dedicates 56th International Theater Festival to Mime and Actor Rafael Fuentes

The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP, for its Spanish acronym) unveiled the full lineup this week for the 56th International Theater Festival, and this year's edition is dedicated to actor, mime, and stage director Rafael Fuentes, in recognition of nearly 60 years in Puerto Rican performing arts ¹².

The festival opens September 30 with "Flamboyants," presented by the Alianza Francesa de Puerto Rico at Teatro Francisco Arriví in Santurce, and runs through mid-December with staged productions, dramatized readings, and complementary activities ¹². ICP executive director Melissa Santana said the Festival "allows us to make space for different voices and ways of doing theater, while recognizing those who have contributed to its development" ¹².

Rafael Fuentes has spent nearly six decades on the local stage. He began acting at 17, trained at the Jacques Lecoq International Theater School in Paris on an ICP scholarship, and later became a retired associate professor at the University of Puerto Rico, where he earned a master's degree in arts education. He also taught at Hostos Community College in New York, the Montessori Family School in Manhattan, and Puerto Rico's Department of Education ¹. As part of the tribute, Fuentes is directing "Los mayores cuentan que cuentan," staged by the Colectivo Teatro para Mayores, running October 9 through 11 at Teatro Victoria Espinosa ¹².

The International Theater Festival is one of the ICP's longest-running performing arts events and aims to foster exchange between local and visiting companies. This edition brings Peru's Teatro La Plaza with its production of "Hamlet" (October 17-18) and the Peruvian collective Yuyachkani with "Des-conocido" (November 13-15), along with the Spanish production "Bernarda y Poncia (silencio, nadie diga nada)" by Teatro Aragua, running October 22 through 25 ¹².

The festival closes December 16 with the premiere of "Los músicos ambulantes," directed by Miguel Rubio and Rosa Luisa Márquez, at Café Teatro Abracadabra ¹².
