121 KFC and Taco Bell Restaurants Close in Puerto Rico: About 2,000 Jobs in Limbo and Two Help Sessions Nov. 10 and 13
CoquiList · With information from Metro Puerto Rico

About 2,000 KFC and Taco Bell workers woke up on Monday, November 2 without a job. Several showed up for their shifts and found the doors closed, with no warning and no date to reopen 4. The government has now set two dates to counsel them: Tuesday, November 10 and Friday, November 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 1. If you are one of them, or know someone who is, the first step is to file an unemployment claim as soon as possible 2.
What happened and why
Yum! Brands, which owns both chains, ended its relationship with Encanto Restaurants, the local operator that ran the franchises on the island. The company said Encanto cannot keep operating to the brands' quality standards and that it is looking for a new franchise partner to reopen 3. Encanto, which also operates Pizza Hut and IHOP, employs more than 3,000 people in Puerto Rico 4.
According to El Vocero, Grupo Serrano, an Ecuadorian operator, would be the leading candidate to take over, though there is no official confirmation. Encanto never confirmed a sale 3. The same report mentions an alleged standoff with the government, but the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC) said it was unaware of any impasse and had received no communication from Yum! Brands 3. In other words: today nobody can guarantee when, or whether, these jobs come back.
The numbers
- 121 restaurants closed: 83 KFC and 38 Taco Bell 3.
- About 2,000 laid-off employees, per the most cited figures; numbers vary by source, and for Taco Bell it is unknown how many workers are affected 3.
- More than 3,000 total employees at Encanto on the island, counting its other brands 4.
- Two DDEC orientation sessions: Tuesday, November 10 for the western region and Friday, November 13 for the metro area, both 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 1.
- 15 local Conexión Laboral offices across the island 1.
- More than 70 court records against Encanto through July 2026, mostly evictions and collections, totaling about $4.1 million, according to El Vocero 3.
The DDEC, led by Carlos J. Ríos Pierluisi, will offer résumé preparation, psychological support, financial counseling, interview workshops, access to employers with openings, information on unemployment insurance and referrals to other agencies 1. Labor Secretary María del Pilar Vélez Casanova said her agency has resources to help with the transition while employees access unemployment insurance, and that its Assistant Secretariat for Worker Benefits began contacting the employer to coordinate assistance 2. Officials have not announced the exact towns or venues for the sessions 1.
What it means for you
For a worker, the urgent matter is cash flow. Every week without filing is another week of uncertainty, so do not wait for the November 10 or 13 session to start the unemployment process 2. The orientation sessions help with everything else: finding work, organizing debts and getting emotional support 1.
If you are a customer, the effect is simpler: no KFC or Taco Bell is open on the island for now, and there is no reopening date 4. If you work for a supplier to these chains, take note: El Vocero reports late payments to suppliers 3. It is wise to document outstanding invoices.
The available reports do not mention severance or compensation payments to employees 3. Keep your pay stubs, your W-2 and any communication from the employer in case you later need to claim wages or benefits.
How to / Checklist
- Go to desempleo.trabajo.pr.gov (Desempleo Digital), create an account or log in and file your initial claim 2.
- Have your personal and employment details ready, including the dates you worked and your separation date 2.
- If you have questions, call the unemployment call center: 787-754-7300 2.
- Check your account regularly for the claim status and any additional requests from the Department of Labor 2.
- Register with the Employment Service at a Conexión Laboral office: Arecibo, Barceloneta, Bayamón, Carolina, Coamo, Fajardo, Guaynabo, Humacao, Isabela, Mayagüez, Ponce, San Germán or San Juan; there are also AMSI centers in Caguas and Guayama 2.
- Mark your calendar: Tuesday, November 10 (west) or Friday, November 13 (metro area), 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Confirm the venue at conexionlaboral.pr.gov 1.
- Keep pay stubs, employer documents and, if you are a supplier, outstanding invoices 3.
What's next
The DDEC said it has started talks with Encanto Restaurants to coordinate help for the affected employees 1. Yum! Brands insists it is seeking a new franchisee, but with no confirmed name or date, reopening remains up in the air 3. A new operator could rehire part of the workforce, but that is not guaranteed. In the meantime, workers should not count on that possibility: unemployment benefits and an active job search are the safe route this week.
