Puerto Rico recorded 135 suicide deaths between January and August 2026, a decrease of 21 cases compared to the 156 reported in the same period of 2025, a 13.5 percent drop, according to the administrator of the Administration of Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services (ASSMCA), Dr. Catherine I. Oliver Franco 13. The announcement came days before World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on September 10 2.

The number, though lower than the previous year, still worries the agency. "These 135 deaths are a great many, it hurts and it concerns us to work on this. Even though there is a decrease, one (life) is too many," Oliver Franco said 3. The data show that 8 out of 10 suicide deaths occur among men, ranging in age from 15 to 85, though the most affected group is men over 50 13. Epidemiologist Nayda Román explained that "men over 50 years old are the most affected" 1. Municipalities with the highest rates include Villalba, Culebra, Vieques, Aibonito, Naranjito and Barranquitas, all with rural profiles 1.

ASSMCA's Línea PAS, the 24-hour emotional support line, received 219,215 calls between January and August 2026, of which 7,526 were directly related to suicidal thoughts or behavior 13. August was the busiest month, with 30,325 calls, the highest monthly total of the year, though officials could not confirm whether the increase was linked to the water crisis affecting several towns during that month 3. Oliver Franco stressed that "prevention begins at home, even among coworkers. We must not overlook the warning signs" 3.

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day, ASSMCA launched the "Hazlo por Ti" (Do It for Yourself) campaign, with activities at Plaza Las Américas, The Outlets at Montehiedra and Plaza del Caribe in Ponce, plus community marches in several municipalities and workshops in schools 2. The day included illusionist Jorge Noda, Línea PAS staff and costumed superheroes, with messages like "Your story continues," "It's okay to ask for help," "You don't have to solve it all today," "Your presence matters," and "Talking helps" 2. "A message may seem like a simple action, but for someone going through a moment of deep pain it can become a sign of hope," Oliver Franco said 2.

What it means for you

If you have a father, uncle or male neighbor over 50 who lives alone, has lost his job, is going through a divorce or a chronic illness, ASSMCA's data show that is the profile at highest risk on the island right now 13. You don't need to wait for an obvious crisis: the rise in calls to Línea PAS during August, coinciding with the water crisis in several towns, suggests that stress over basic services can also become an emotional risk factor 3. If you live in Villalba, Culebra, Vieques, Aibonito, Naranjito or Barranquitas, your municipality is among those with the highest rates, so knowing the resources available near you can make a difference 1.

How to do it / Checklist

  1. Save ASSMCA's Línea PAS number on your phone: 988 or 1-800-981-0023, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, free and confidential 2.
  2. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, use the TTY service at 1-888-672-7622 or VRS at 787-615-4112 1.
  3. You can also seek guidance through chat at lineapas.assmca.pr.gov without needing to call 2.
  4. Learn to recognize warning signs in men over 50: sudden isolation, comments about feeling like a burden, giving away belongings, or drastic mood changes 13.
  5. If you notice those signs in a coworker, family member or neighbor, don't assume someone else already checked on them; ask directly how they are doing and offer to help them find support 3.
  6. Visit prevencionsuicidio.salud.pr.gov, the Health Department portal with educational materials, warning signs, and the safe firearm storage map 4.
  7. If you work at a school, business or church, contact ASSMCA to coordinate an emotional management workshop or prevention training like those offered during "Hazlo por Ti" 2.

What's next

ASSMCA and the Department of Health have committed to turning prevention into a multi-sector effort. Health Secretary Dr. Víctor M. Ramos Otero keeps an interactive dashboard running that monitors suicide incidence by region in real time, identifying higher-risk zones and associated factors, available to health professionals, researchers and prevention organizations 4. That effort is paired with the Multisectoral Alliance for Suicide Prevention, which brings together government agencies, mental health hospitals, universities, faith communities, gun store owners and the College of Health Services Administrators, among others, to coordinate joint strategies 4. With 2026's data showing a decline but still 135 lives lost, the agency has signaled that identifying high-risk municipalities, like the six rural towns mentioned, and sustaining focus on men over 50, will remain the priority for the rest of the year 134.
